The Dennis Head Beacon , German Dennis Head Beacon , is a 21 m high lighthouse on the Scottish Orkney island of North Ronaldsay , the northernmost of the larger Orkney Islands. The lighthouse is listed in the highest category A in the Scottish monument lists.
history
After the lighthouses on the Mull of Kintyre and Kinnaird Head , the lighthouse on Dennis Head was the third lighthouse in Scotland and the first in the Orkney Islands. As a designer, Thomas Smith was responsible for the planning. Smith's stepson Robert Stevenson , the founder of the later famous lighthouse building family, was involved in the construction of a lighthouse for the first time during the construction of the Dennis Head Beacon . The most easterly point of the Dennis Head headland was chosen as the location . John White and James Sinclair completed the construction of the tower and outbuildings. Due to the sluggish supply of material and labor from Leith , completion took until autumn 1789. The cost of construction was around £ 200. Like the Eilean Glas Lighthouse , the Dennis Head Beacon was first lit on October 10, 1789.
After the Start Point lighthouse on Sanday went into operation in 1806 , the lighthouse at Dennis Head appeared superfluous and it was decommissioned in 1809, twenty years after it was commissioned. Increasing shipping accidents in the catchment area of the former lighthouse showed the need for a beacon on North Ronaldsay. With the North Ronaldsay Lighthouse , a new lighthouse was built one kilometer northwest of the Dennis Head Beacon in 1852.
