The Department of the Army (about "Army Office 'German) is one of three departments within the Ministry of Defense of the United States ( United States Department of Defense ). Its forerunner was the Department of War until the National Defense Act of 1947 .

Unlike the US Navy Office or once -Ministry ( Department of the Navy ) had the Department of the Army from its inception in 1947, never Cabinet rank . Both take together with the likewise 1947 created Air Force Office ( Department of the Air Force , the administrative and technical tasks for each) armed forces under the umbrella of the Department of Defense true.

The Department of the Army is the Secretary of the Army ( Army Secretary out); this is Ryan McCarthy as the 23rd incumbent since September 29, 2019. The SECARM is a civilian employee who is responsible for the administrative side of the US Army , but the chief commander of the military chain of command is the Chief of Staff of the Army .
