Wolfram Seltensteiner, the 23-year-old host of the Black Eagle in Kirchbrunn, drives a guest traveling home to the train station in Geßnitz. Wolfram's father, the old Adler host, is hoping for a good match for his son and has the daughter of the large farmer Salmhofer in Geßnitz in his sights. Wolfram drives past the farm on the way back, but cannot make up his mind to make a flying visit. On the further journey home, the young host relaxes in the forest, lets his horses graze and, meanwhile, rests to one side. Before the onset of rain, two young girls picking berries save themselves in his carriage. Wolfram is secretly tensing. The girls only notice the successful prank on full speed in the direction of Schwambach. Too late. Jumping off would be too dangerous. The gentleman gallantly opens the car door to the young ladies in front of the Schwambach inn and invites them to dance. He favors the maid Friederika, called Frieda, and neglects Kunigunde Salmhofer, called Kundel. The latter is a good match mentioned above. After the dance, Wolfram is asked out by the 30-year-old Schubhart Schopper, called Schopper-Schub. The forest worker from Wallischdorf asserts older rights to Frieda: because once he fished her out of the Mühlbach at risk of death and was therefore her savior.

The new railway line directs streams of tourists past Kirchbrunn. Wolfram's father, who is economically in trouble, insists on Kunigunde Salmhofer as the son's bride and takes part personally in the courtship . The Salmhoferbauer sees through the old Adlerwirt. Nevertheless the connection is made. The father-in-law provides his daughter, the sole heiress Kundel, with 3,000 guilders. Baron Klobenstein - it is said that the nobleman does business with the large farmer Salmhofer - comes up with a generous wedding arrangement. Everything seems to be going according to plan. And the Schopper-Schub is grateful to Wolfram that he released Frieda by marrying. After the wedding, Kundel moves into the Kirchbrunn Black Eagle . The marriage was not a lucky star from the start. Wolfram suffers from the harshness and heartlessness of his young wife. From afar, the jealous Kundel intrigues against Frieda, who is still serving as a young girl on her father's farm in Geßnitz. Frieda - she lost her mother nine years ago - is released in the middle of winter. Wolfram, who found out about this, looked in vain for his beloved in the Geßnitz area and then in Niederleuth and St. Magdalena. Frieda found shelter in the meager field and meadow management of the Möstl farmer in the remote, barren Abachleuten. Wolfram doesn't know that, but Schopper-Schub does. In the meantime he has risen to the rank of foreknecht, the latter visits Frieda regularly in his spare time and submits his plans for the future to her. Did he not in Zagelwald - this is a hard to reach mountain forest - the accomplished impossible held with thirty wooden servants in four months: Through its giant slides , the most beautiful felled and peeled fir and larch logs into the valley. The lumberjacks are daring fellows. After work they ride on a board, with a stick here and there, directing or correcting the path with a loud cheer in a few minutes, sometimes over deep chasms down into the Siebenbachwald. Frieda closes her admirer's plans for the future.

Wolfram penetrates to the Schopper-Schub, finds out Frieda's whereabouts, goes there and confesses his love to her. The Schopper-Schub overhears the lovers, wants to kill Wolfram, but does not manage to do it at the crucial moment.

After the death of Kundel's father, the old Adlerwirt wants to inherit on behalf of the young people. But everything on the farm in Geßnitz belongs to Baron Klobenstein. Also, the Eagle Tavern forfeited Gant . Kundel, in indomitable jealousy, reaches - like her husband before - the Zagelwald via the Siebenbachwald. The Schopper-Schub wants to lead Kundel to the two lovebirds in the Abachleuten after work. First the lumberjacks rush down the wooden pipe with a loud whoop. The Schopper-Schub then grabs his stick and asks Kundel as a passenger on his board. On the descent, the foreknecht abruptly pulls the vehicle out of the narrow track at full speed over the abyss. The two unfortunates fall over forest tops deep into the abyss and crash on a stony stream bed.

Frieda has felt married to Schopper since his suicide and wishes Wolfram luck in life.
