The Rock (Rachmaninoff)

The rock (op. 7; Russian: Утёс) is a symphonic poem by Sergei Rachmaninow , which is dedicated to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov . It was composed in the summer of 1893 and its world premiere took place on April 2, 1894 in Moscow at a concert of the Russian Music Society.

The material of the symphonic poem is taken from the poem Der Felsen by Michail Lermontow . The theme is the encounter between a rock and a cloud, which in the long term cannot enter into a relationship with one another.
