action

Fidel Waldhauser is a poor hop picker from the Bavarian Forest. He works for the rich Sichbauern in the Hallertau and has fallen in love with his daughter Reserl. When he asks for her hand, Reserl proudly rejects him because of his poverty and his origins. She believes that she has found her future husband in Vinzenz Wurmdobler, the son of one of her father's comrades in the war.

When she and her father want to visit the Wurmdobler family estate in the Bavarian Forest, she is horrified. The Wurmdobler family's property is neither stately nor debt-free, but rather dilapidated and in debt. In addition, Reserl and her father learn that the bridegroom Vincent is of bad repute as a womanizer. Fidel Waldhauser, who works as a lumberjack at Wurmdobler after the hop harvest, helps Reserl and her father.

The happy ending only follows with the hop harvest in the following year. When the Hopfenzupfer come back to the Hallertau and celebrate a party there, Reserl chooses Fidel Waldhauser as her dancer and bridegroom.
