action

The young healer Lijanas from the Nivard people lives in Anshara, the capital of Astrakhar. She is kidnapped by Mordan, a warrior from the warring Kjer. He has received the order from his king Haffren to bring the healer to him in the capital of Telmahr, Turas. He is also supposed to get the "tears of the white snake" for a healing ritual. Although Lijanas is a prisoner of Mordan, she begins to feel drawn to the dark general. He too is beginning to feel something for her. But Lijanas is already in a relationship with the prince of Astrakhar, Ahmeer. Prince asked for her hand and she asked for time to think it over. This finally begins to pursue Mordan, who is also called the blood wolf, and his companions. Pursued by the soul eater, wolf-like creatures, Mordan suspects that they are after Lijansas. These beings, known only from legends, pursue the kidnappers. On the way to Kassens Klamm, where Mordan is supposed to get the "tears of the white snake", they have to cross the salt desert. In addition, Levan, the youngest of the general's companions, falls ill with a strange disease after being wounded by a soul eater. After a salt storm, they reach the town of Cavallin at the last moment, where the group takes shelter. But there an epidemic breaks out, which originates from a dead soul eater in the drinking water, and claims many victims among the residents of the city. Corfar also falls victim to her, while Levan seems to get well again. Lijanas and Mordan pose as a married couple. When they leave, they are discovered by Prince Ahmeer, who had been chasing them. Mordan is badly wounded by a crossbow bolt.

After another persecution, Lijanas is able to free herself from the violence of her almost unconscious kidnapper and thus protect him from the Nivard. A short time later, she and Ahmeer, who picked her up, are captured again, albeit by Kjer, who report to the second military leader, Jerdt. This is enemies with Mordan, because he tormented him when Mordan was still an unfree under the former general Jarat. He made Mordan the first general when he found out shortly before his death that he was trained by the Kessanan, a cruel warrior clan. Mordan is very educated and as a warrior far superior to all others.

In the Kjer camp, Lijanas nurses Mordan, who has been recovered badly wounded, back to health. Then they set off to Kassen's gorge. On the way there they are captured by a steppe people. They want to kill Mordan first, but after he protects Lijanas like his own flesh and blood, they stun the two of them and make them sleep together under a kind of "love drug". This seals the bond between the witch of the soul and Cogén. Lijanas is plagued by feelings of guilt on her onward journey to Kassen's Gorge, as she has been promised to Ahmeer and Mordan has orders to bring her to Turas unaffected. When they reach Kassens Klamm, they find the "tears of the white snake". On the way back they meet Levan, who has turned into a kind of soul eater, so Mordan is forced to kill him. Mordan is accompanied to Turas by Jerdt and his former teacher, the high master Arkell of the Kessanan, because he refused to extradite Lijana.

There he is imprisoned by King Haffren and learns that Jerdt Haffren is an illegitimate son. Ladakh, the astrologicus and healer of the king, wants to free a cruel god of his people, the Hathenan, in a ritual with Lijana's help. In addition, Jerdt kills his father Haffren in the meantime so that he can ascend the throne with Ladakh's help. Mordan, who was freed by Brachan, saves Lijanas, Ahmeer and Queen Naisee, who is thought to be mad, at the last moment.

But then he is captured by the Nivard. After arriving in Anshara, Mordan was hung on the cross and tortured after a few days. After three days, Queen Naisee reached the capital of Astrakhar and negotiated with Prince Rusan about the release of the prisoner. After declaring that Mordan is the son of her and Rusan's brother Kedar, who was murdered by Haffren, he leaves her to the prisoners. Lijanas frees herself from Ahmeer's power by publicly confessing to him that she is a witch of the soul and that the Kjer is her protector. She visits Mordan, believed to be dead, on his sickbed, where the two become engaged.

Lijanas

Lijanas is a healer who lives among the blessed of the Rabin in Anshara, because she saved the life of the prince of the Nivard, Rusan. Her mother, who, like her, is a soul witch of the Edari, disappeared without a trace after an attack. Her father was also kidnapped by the Edari when Lijanas was young. She is very compassionate but also very brave. She helps the sick and helpless as best she can. She is promised to the future Prince of Nivard, Ahmeer, but has not yet agreed to marry him. At the beginning she lives with her blind foster mother, Niegra, the first blessed of the Rabin in Anshara.

Mordan

Mordan is the first general of the Kjer. He is the son of Queen Naisee and Nivardfürst Kedar, but grew up believing that he was the son of an unfree whore and thus himself a slave. He received cruel training from the Kessanan and learned to obey orders without contradiction. After completing his training, he became a slave to the then military leader Jarat. There, however, he was tortured for no reason by a young nobleman named Jerdt and repeatedly tortured. But then Mordan was adopted by Jarat and made his successor on his deathbed.
