first act
Ms. Sumburov visits a French fashion store in St. Petersburg to look around for her stepdaughter's upcoming wedding. Leskow notices this and is dismayed that he is in love with this stepdaughter, Lisa (and she with him). Ms. Sumburow would like to marry Lisa off to one of her relatives, Mr. Nedoschtschetow.
In search of his wife, Mr. Sumburow enters the shop. He is averse to anything French and abruptly ends his wife's shopping spree.
Second act
Mascha, the clerk in the fashion store, is friends with Leskow and wants to help him. When she heard that the windy Monsieur Tricher had a borrower's note from a Mr. Nedoschtschetow with him, she passed this information on to Mr. Sumburow, who was dismayed that the future son-in-law intended by his wife owed a French man.
This development, which is favorable for Leskow, will be reversed again immediately. Thanks to the help of Mascha and Madame Carié, the owner of the shop, Leskow and Lisa meet secretly, which is discovered by chance by Mr. and Mrs. Sumburow. Sumburow is beside himself. He curses Leskov, for whom he actually has a tendency because he knew his father well. The Sumburows including Lisa leave the shop.
Third act
Frau Sumburow was lured into the shop on the pretext that there was cheap smuggled goods to buy. When her husband suddenly appears, she hides in a closet with Mascha's help. Shortly afterwards, Monsieur Tricher also turns up with the police in tow, whom he pointed out to smuggled goods in the fashion store in order to harm his compatriot Madame Carié.
The Francophobe Mr. Sumburow is also very interested in uncovering the machinations of the shop and can only be prevented by Leskow at the last minute from opening the cupboard in which his wife is hidden from the police. As a reward, he gives Leskov permission to marry his daughter Lisa.
Masha, who played a key role in this intrigue, was bought out by Leskov as a thank you and also received a dowry of 3,000 rubles.
