The first kindergarten (First kindergarten) in Watertown , Wisconsin , is the first in the United States , founded in kindergarten .
history
The United States' first kindergarten opened in 1856 at 919 Charles Street in Watertown.
In her home, Margarethe Schurz initially looked after her own daughter and four nephews and nieces. When more children came along, she opened a school in the house. In 1956 the building was restored by the Watertown Historical Society and is now a museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 .
