Lillian Barylli-Fayer (born July 8, 1917 in New York , † December 14, 2014 in Vienna ) was an Austrian artist-photographer.

Life

Lillian Fayer came from a family of photographers. Her great-grandfather was already an employee of Louis Daguerre and opened the first photo studio on his advice and with his support. The first documented mention of the Fayer family photo dynasty can be found around 1850 in Budapest.

Lillian Fayer was born in New York in 1917, where her Hungarian father Georg Fayer (1892–1950) worked as a photographer and photographed well-known artists. In 1922 they moved to Budapest, in 1924 to Vienna. In 1935 her father opened a photo studio in London, where he was allowed to work as a society and artist photographer for the royal family. In 1937 the family returned from London to Vienna, where Lillian worked in her father's photo studio. She received her training at the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna and from her father.

In 1942 Lillian Fayer took over his father's photo studio in the Heinrichshof across from the Vienna State Opera . On March 12, 1945, an air raid caused a fire that severely damaged the building. As a replacement for the destroyed studio, after the war premises were moved to Opernring 6, where the photo studio is still located today (as of 2014) and is run as a family business by her son Andreas Barylli-Fayer (* 1945). Her second son Georg (* 1949) also worked for the company, and Andreas Barylli-Fayer was elected President of the World Council of Professional Photographers (WCPP) in 1997.

In 1952 Lillian Fayer was invited to the Salzburg Festival to take portrait photos for showcases and for the artists' postcard sales - an activity that she pursued every summer until 1961. For the Vienna State Opera, Lillian Fayer created not only press photos but also role and costume portraits, which were then sold as postcards, especially during the era of Herbert von Karajan (1956 to 1964). For the 100th anniversary of the State Opera (1969) eight special stamps were minted after their photos.

In addition to the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera, she also photographed for the Vienna Volksoper , the Raimundtheater and the Theater an der Wien . Fayer was a co-founder of the Society for Music Theater in 1958 .

On the occasion of Lillian Barylli-Fayer's 95th birthday, the photo exhibition Portraits by Fayer took place in the Gustav Mahler Hall in the Vienna State Opera from May to September 2012 . A selection of around 30,000 photos that Barylli-Fayer had taken of artists at the Vienna State Opera from the 1960s onwards was shown.

Lillian Barylli-Fayer's first marriage was to the violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic, Walter Barylli (* 1921). The two sons Andreas and Georg come from this connection.

On December 14, 2014, the artist, described by State Opera Director Dominique Meyer as a State Opera chronicler , died at the age of 97 in Vienna.
