The failed Varus

The failed Varus is a plastic made of bronze in the Cardinal von Galen Park near downtown Haltern am See near the early modern Siebenteufelsturm storm. It was created by Wilfried Koch as the first project of the Masthoff Cultural Foundation, founded in 2001, and set up in 2003 in the park on the edge of the city center. The 2.30 m high and 650 kg heavy bronze figure represents the defeated general Publius Quinctilius Varus after the Varus Battle . It reflects the inner turmoil and the deep fall of the betrayed and humiliated general who perished with his troops in the year 9 and followed the defeat killed itself. The sculpture was given to the city of Haltern on permanent loan .

The figure's distinctive hands are a special trademark of the sculptor Wilfried Koch, so-called "Koch hands" have become a stylistic term for his work.
