The Wandering Staff

The wandering staff is a fairy tale ( AaTh 777). It is in Ludwig Bechstein's New German Book of Fairy Tales at position 32 and is based on Klaus Groth's poem Der Pukerstock from 1853.

An emaciated hiker puts his staff in the corner of the landlady's. Your young son comes and hides him in the watch case. From then on the staff forces him to go hiking every Friday and everywhere he foresees the needs and illnesses of the people. He is losing weight and is close to death. The rod cannot be locked in or destroyed. One night the staff tells the boy how old he is and how old he belonged to St. Jacob. The stranger comes and fetches the stick again.

Bechstein found the fairy tale in the morning paper for educated readers , 1856. It is based on Klaus Groth's poem Der Pukerstock from 1853.
