Under Descemetocele (synonym: Keratozele ) refers to a by the intraocular pressure caused dot-shaped protrusion of the cornea to the intact Descemet's membrane within a circumscribed ulcer , an inflammatory process (eg. Herpes corneae ) or corneal injury. As soon as the Descemet's membrane is broken, aqueous humor flows out through the opening . As a result, fistula formation , corneal scars, iris prolapse or panophthalmia can occur. With extensive substance defects, a staphyloma can develop on the thinned cornea . The symptoms are known in both human and veterinary medicine .
Descemetocele usually occurs on one side, although rare cases are known in which both eyes were affected.
