Deserters Monument in Bernau

The deserter monument in Bernau near Berlin is a bronze relief by the Biesenthal sculptor Friedrich Schötschel . It was installed on May 15, 1998, “ Conscientious Objectors ' Day ”, on the northern passage of the town's historic city wall.

The relief shows a deserter shackled at his hands and feet during his execution . His eyes are blindfolded. There are numerous bullet holes in the wall next to him. The relief is supplemented by the inscription “Because he did not want to kill”.

A metal plate at the foot of the relief commemorates all deserters and conscientious objectors. You can read on it:

“Dedicated to all deserters and objectors whose home is Mother Earth, who recognize the enemy as human brother, who instead of generals listen to the command of their conscience, who cling not to ideologues but to life, whose fear is less than their love. Bernau. May 15, 1998. "

There are two more monuments within sight of the deserters' monument; on the one hand the war memorial to commemorate several armed conflicts in the 19th century, on the other hand the obelisk of the cemetery of honor for those killed in the Red Army .
