Live and act

School, war and imprisonment

Even before he graduated from school, Friedrich Schötschel was called up as an anti-aircraft helper in the Wehrmacht and then joined the infantry on the western front. In February 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Americans, but was handed over to the French troops with numerous other prisoners of war. So Schötschel got to France and there several times in other camps. Among other things, he had to work in the quarry and in an iron foundry. An art competition was held in one of the camps, in which Friedrich Schötschel took part with a figure carved into a paving stone. He scratched the figure with a steel needle and won the first prize. Imprisoned artists, including a sculptor and a master carver , soon allowed Schötschel to actively participate after making a sample. They also gave him valuable tips for further work of his own and thus deepened his interest in art.

Art education and work after graduation

In 1948 he was released from captivity and went back to his native Halle. The experience in the camp had awakened in him the desire to become a visual artist . Schötschel began studying sculpture at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in autumn 1948 . He became a student of Gustav Weidanz . He began to use a wide variety of materials for his work.

In 1952/53 Friedrich Schötschel got the opportunity to work with other artists on the reconstruction of the Berlin State Opera . He particularly remembers a female figure above the stage and studies in Sanssouci Palace and the New Palace in Potsdam. Friedrich Schötschel became a freelance artist and turned to church art at an early stage due to his Christian outlook. He designed and manufactured numerous furnishings for church buildings such as altars , baptismal fonts , figures of Mary , tabernacles , church doors, stalls, church windows . The bishop's staff and the bishop's cross for Rudolf Müller in Görlitz also come from his workshop (1987). Schötschel's artistic work uses all common materials such as stone, steel and iron, copper, bronze, silver, enamel, and precious stones. He did not manufacture everything himself; this was done by stonemasons or in collaboration with an art locksmith. Most of his works, which can be found in around 60 cities in the GDR, are documented himself. Friedrich Schötschel did not finish his work until he was over 80 years old.

Personal

Schötschel was married to Margit, née Gabriel, daughter of a Berlin architect. Margit Schötschel was also a trained sculptor. The family has lived and worked in Biesenthal near Bernau since 1964 . She has two sons, one of whom co-founded and ran a local restoration workshop. Friedrich Schötschel was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR from 1960 until the fall of the Wall . He is still a member of the "Förderkreis Bildende Kunst eV Galerie Bernau".

Man with goat
  • 1989: man with goat :
a commission for the city administration of Bernau ;
set up in the Goethepark Bernau, bronze, 2.40 meters high.
With this sculpture, Schötschel expressed the close but also very problematic human-animal relationship that had developed over the centuries. The heavy animal is supported by the man's legs and tries to keep his balance over his shoulder because it depends on humans. The man turns away from the animal and thereby expresses his conflict ( ambivalent ) for “first care for - then eat”. When the order was placed, the city leaders wanted a more contemporary depiction like a farmer or a railroad worker with a goat. Later, some viewers made a mental connection to the couplet “Zickenschulze from Bernau”, which, however, was expressly not the artist's intention.
  • A memorial inaugurated in 1995 to commemorate the more than 600 people who died of malnutrition and illness in the village of Lobetal between 1945 and 1947, at the Lobetal cemetery:
The memorial element is an upright concrete segment in which a bronze heart was hung between bars and inserted so that it can be seen from both sides. The heart uses built-in electronics to generate sounds similar to a person's heartbeat . A vertical crack runs through the concrete slab, symbolizing the “lost home” or “destroyed people”. The sculptor himself explains the design as follows: The memorial “... is intended to be reminiscent of ruins that shaped the image in cities and villages. In addition to the structural ruins, it also means the many human ruins, the destroyed fates and hopes. ”The heartbeat, on the other hand, expresses the principle of“ hope ”. The following inscription was placed in the base part:
00“1945–1947. Mass grave for more than 600 refugees and residents - victims of the consequences of National Socialist tyranny.
00Unknown and yet known. 2 cor 69 ".

Schötschel more in some work on copper - embossed works , because the procurement of cast material for bronze works in the GDR was problematic.
