Deshmukh

Deshmukh , Hindi देशमुख , "mouth (or head) of the country", is a historical honorary title and an office in the Dechan of India, especially among the Marathas . Deshmukh denotes a kind of mayor and large landowner, corresponding to the Chowdhury of northern India. Through military services and levies in their district, they were able to rise to the position of sardar ("leader, boss").
