A desktop pager , or pager for short , is a small program to simplify the administration of multiple or virtual desktops . For this purpose, the pager displays the contents of the desktops in small format and usually abstracts the windows with a kind of shadow.

In particular, window managers under Unix use this option to make it easier for the user to work with virtual desktops .

The KDE desktop environment uses the KPager, for example, Gnome integrates a pager as an applet in its panel.
