Detect is an open-source - spyware scanner, looking on Windows PCs for active monitoring software.

The program was developed by a group headed by Claudio Guarnieri from Rapid7 on behalf of the civil rights organizations Amnesty International , Digitale Gesellschaft , Electronic Frontier Foundation and Privacy International . It is available in Amharic, Arabic, German, English, Italian and Spanish.

Detekt does not have to be installed on the PC, but has to be started with administrator rights. It then finds active surveillance software like the state trojan and displays it. The programs found cannot be uninstalled with Detekt; it does not replace a normal virus scanner. Detekt finds the software BlackShades RAT , DarkComet RAT, FinFisher FinSpy, Gh0stRat , Hacking Team RCS, njRAT, ShadowTech RAT and XtremeRAT.

Detekt is written in Python and uses the pattern matching software Yara. It runs on all Windows versions from XP, but currently not on the 64-bit version of Windows 8.1.
