Detlev Schauwecker (born December 23, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German Japanologist and professor emeritus at Kansai University in Osaka , Japan.

Life

After studying Japanese Studies, Sinology and German Studies at universities in Berlin, Hamburg and Marburg University , he received his doctorate in Marburg in 1973 with studies on Chikamatsu Monzaemon - two bourgeois puppet shows. Linguistic style and structure . His academic teachers were Wolf Hänisch, Horst Hammitzsch and Oscar Benl .

In 1974 Schauwecker moved to Japan. Here he initially worked for two years as an assistant professor at the Foreign Language School Kyoto (Kyōto Gaikokugo Daigaku). In 1977 he moved to Kansai University in Osaka Prefecture , one of the largest private universities in Western Japan, where he taught as an assistant professor until 1981, then as a professor. In 2007 he retired.

Schauwecker published numerous publications on theater and mission history topics under the aspect of west-east relations. At times he was head of the Kobe branch of the German Society for Natural History and Ethnology of East Asia (OAG).

Trivia

In 2002 he directed the first Japanese performance of Michael Haydn's opera Titus Ukondonus in Hiyoshi-cho, Kyoto and played the flute in the orchestra.
