Detour Island (from English detour , diversion, detour ' ) is an island in the Wilhelm Archipelago off the west coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is 4 km west of False Cape Renard on the west side of the Lemaire Canal .
Participants of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot mapped them. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the island that way in 1959 because it is close to the ship passage west of Booth Island , which is an alternative route in case the Lemaire Channel is blocked by sea ice .
