Deusdedit of Canterbury

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deusdedit (also: Adeodatus, Frithona; † July 14, 664 ) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 655 until his death .

Archbishop Deusdedit adopted this name with his ordination, his birth name was Frithona; he was the first Anglo-Saxon to become Archbishop of Canterbury. The exact role of the archbishopric during his tenure seems somewhat unclear, as a number of bishops in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were ordained not by Deusdedit but by British or foreign bishops. Deusdedit, however, founded a nunnery on the island of Thanet and, in 657, the monastery of Madshamstead.

At the decisive Synod of Whitby , which brought the Roman cult the victory over the Celtic cult, Deusdedit could not take part because he was sick with the plague . He died a few months later. Earconberht I , King of Kent , also died on this day . He was succeeded by Theodor of Tarsus .
