German-Chinese Society - Friends of Taiwan

The German-Chinese Society eV - Friends of Taiwan is an association promoting relations with Taiwan in Germany.

history

The society was founded in 1957 and is the oldest association for the promotion of relations with Taiwan in Germany, whose members include Germans and Taiwanese. The society initially consisted primarily of members of the German Bundestag who were concerned about the long-term development of German-Taiwanese relations. It now unites citizens from Germany and Taiwan. With the move to Berlin, the company changed its name. By adding “Friends of Taiwan”, she clarifies her orientation. The company is the only one of its kind in Europe.

Purpose of the association

The registered non-profit association pursues the "international understanding". According to the articles of association, the society advocates the maintenance, care and strengthening of the diverse relationships between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It tries to promote and intensify the efforts that serve to convey culture and enable cultural exchange between Taiwan and Germany. It supports efforts to consolidate and expand political, diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. The company also promotes sports relations and tourism between the countries.

The society is politically neutral.

Political importance

Since 1989, the society has initiated the founding of the Bonn / Berlin-Taipei Parliamentary Circle of Friends after every federal election . Due to the one-China policy, there are no diplomatic relations between Germany and Taiwan.

Board

The chairperson and the board members exercise their work on a voluntary basis. The chairman of the company has been Anita Schäfer , Member of the Bundestag, who replaced Wolfgang Lüder in his office since 2008 . The association is based in Berlin .
