history

In 1907, German settlers in Tanga attacked Governor Albrecht von Rechenberg's colonial policy in the Usambara Post . The latter then instructed his officials to no longer support the newspaper published in the German state school in Tanga, whereupon the newspaper was discontinued. Willy von Roy declared his solidarity with the settlers and had the Usaramo post printed for three months for the market that had become free .

Colonial policy

Albrecht von Rechenberg, who wanted to promote African agriculture and a European-Indian trader class, refused to intensify immigration from Europe and to promote German agriculture in East Africa. He showed little sympathy for the German colonial society , but was open to African cultures, including languages. In contrast, the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Zeitung took the position of the colonists of German origin.

A popular topic in the German-East African newspaper was clashes with its northern neighbors, the Maasai . The newspaper quoted Bishop Jean-Joseph Hirth (1854–1931) from Ukara approvingly as saying that peace in the country could not be restored until the last Maasai was exterminated .

The German-East African government had the German-East African Rundschau relocated to promote government policy. The first edition appeared on August 22, 1908, but was not bought by the German settlers.

The government withdrew the 250 government subscriptions from the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Zeitung , no longer had any official advertisements printed and took the license to print the Official Gazette for German East Africa as well as for Der Pflanzer .

Von Roy then published printed matter with similar-sounding names: Official advertisements for German East Africa and The German East African Planter (first edition June 19, 1909).

Passavant, a journalist for the German-East African Rundschau , researched that von Roy had been fined in a minor case in 1899. Subsequently, the German-East African newspaper reported on a homosexual relationship between Rechenberg and one of his servants. In November 1910, a court sentenced von Roy to six months in custody and expulsion to the German Reich for defamation . Wilhelm II canceled the prison sentence, but not his expulsion from German East Africa.

In 1911 von Roy appointed Alfred Zintgraff as publisher for the German-East African newspaper . Zintgraff founded the German East African newspaper GmbH. Zintgraff made Wilhelm Föllmer, the chairman of the German Colonial Association, chairman of the supervisory board . Rechenberg was replaced in October 1911, and the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Zeitung was able to take over advertisers and subscribers from the bankruptcy estate of the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Rundschau from Der Pflanzer and Official Anzeiger for German East Africa .

When Dar es Salaam was occupied by the British Army in the First World War , the newspaper moved its printing location to Morogoro , where the last edition appeared in August 1916.
