The German Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG . The company's headquarters are in Kirchheim unter Teck near Stuttgart, while batteries are manufactured in Kamenz , Saxony . A total of more than 500,000 batteries have been manufactured since the start of production (as of 2019).

history

Deutsche Accumotive was founded in 2009 as a joint venture between Daimler AG and the Essen chemical company Evonik Industries . Daimler AG held 90% of the shares, while Evonik held 10%.

The first battery produced by Deutsche Accumotive was used in 2012 in the 3rd generation of the Smart Fortwo ( 451 ). It replaced a battery that had been installed in vehicles since 2009 and was purchased from the US manufacturer Tesla Motors . The cells were supplied by the Kamenz-based company Li-Tec Battery , in which Daimler AG was also involved, and assembled into battery modules at Accumotive. The 93-cell battery had a brief maximum output of 55 kW and a continuous output of 35 kW with a weight of 175 kg. The cells for the successor model installed in the 4th generation of the Smart Fortwo come from the South Korean manufacturer LG Chem .

In 2014, Daimler AG took over the shares held by Evonik in Accumotive and Li-Tec Battery, which had previously also existed as a joint venture between Daimler (49.9%) and Evonik (50.1%). Both companies thus became wholly owned subsidiaries of the Stuttgart-based automotive group.

In 2016 Daimler invested 500 million euros to expand the Accumotive factory premises in Kamenz with a second production facility. In the course of this, a further 40,000 square meters were added to the existing 20,000 square meters of production space. Accumotive Plant II is designed as a CO 2 -neutral factory. The factory premises include a combined heat and power plant and a photovoltaic system , which, in combination with geothermal energy, supply the production facilities with electricity.

As of May 1, 2018, the Accumotive development areas, which were located in the Kirchheim district of Nabern , were split off from Accumotive and integrated into the Untertürkheim plant of Daimler AG. The headquarters of Accumotive were only moved from Kirchheim unter Teck to Kamenz in July 2020.

The batteries for the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric car have been manufactured by Accumotive since 2019 . With a total weight of 650 kg and an energy content of 80 kWh, it is by far the largest battery manufactured by Accumotive.
