The German distance school based in Wetzlar ( Hesse ) offers state-approved distance learning for German-speaking preschool and elementary school children abroad. Students include children of development workers, diplomats, managers, professionals, missionaries, and professional soldiers. The school is sponsored by a non-profit association.

history

The German distance learning school goes back to the now 77-year-old pedagogue Alfred Finken (Ochtendonk near Koblenz). As a teacher at an orphanage in Neukirchen-Vluyn on the Lower Rhine, he heard about the missionary family Klaus-Jürgen and Brigitte Muckenhaupt, who worked on behalf of the Neukirchen Mission in Kenya. There was no possibility of going to school for the three school-age children of the Muckenhaupts, and the couple wondered whether they should stop working in Kenya. In order to prevent this, Finken developed the first learning letters, as the former pioneer described in a festival service. At his request, the teacher Alfred Finken put together suitable textbooks in 1971 and designed the first materials for the pedagogically inexperienced parents as well as test exercises to monitor the progress made. In 1972 Alfred Grünhagen took over the successor. In 1976 Günter Schwesig became managing director of the association. The Foreign Office refers to the possibility of teaching at the German Distance Learning School.
In 1998 the German Distance Learning School moved from Gießen to Wetzlar. In 2001 Georg Pflüger took over the management and school management.

deals

The range of subjects in the full courses extends to German and mathematics (grades 1–5), general science (grades 1–4), English and art (two courses each).

Individual courses

All courses at the Deutsche Fernschule can be taken individually or combined as required. The subject German is often taken in addition to attending a local or international school, so that the child's knowledge of German is kept at an age-appropriate level and the return to the German school system remains possible without any problems.

Substitute school lessons

Distance learning offers the opportunity to take completely school-based lessons. For this purpose, the subjects German, mathematics and general science must be taken. English and / or art can optionally complement the subject selection.

Basic courses

The basic courses for the subject German convey the core contents of grammar, spelling and vocabulary formation for the respective grade level according to the German curriculum. Compared to the classic German course, the basic courses do not include the subjects of essay theory and literature review. The students are therefore not confronted with longer texts and are rarely asked to write longer essays, letters, stories, etc.

The basic courses for grades 1 to 4 are currently available.

Online courses

The content of the online courses for German is structured in the same way as the basic courses. In contrast to these, however, in the online courses all content, tasks and tests are conveyed and processed online in a protected learning portal. German online courses are available for grades 4 to 6.

For special support in the case of learning difficulties and diagnosed learning disabilities such as dyscalculia, dyslexia, reading and spelling weaknesses or ADD / ADHD / HKS, the German Distance School offers tests, support modules and advice for parents.
