The German war cemetery Bartossen (Bartosze) ( Polish : Cmentarz Żołnierzy Niemieckich Bartosze ) is located near Bartosze in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , which belongs to the Gmina Ełk ( rural community of Lyck ) in the powiat Ełcki ( Lyck district ). 84 German soldiers from the First World War and 20,000 dead from the Second World War rest here .

Coming from Ełk , road number 16 leads west towards Olsztyn. After five kilometers there is a street on the right to the war cemetery. The hallmarks of the complex are the three wooden crosses that can be seen from afar, which bear witness to the cemetery of the First World War.

The dead

The war cemetery is a collective cemetery for those killed in action from the area of ​​former East Prussia and Bialystok. The first dead buried here were from the First World War from the winter battle in Masuria . Then about 15,000 dead from the Second World War were transferred here. In 2017, 2,974 dead (former prisoners of war and civilians, including women and children who died of disease and starvation) from the prisoner-of-war cemetery of a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp with a large hospital in the city of Thorn (Toruń) were placed in bed. The prisoner of war cemetery was found while a new residential area was being built.

The WWI cemetery was renovated in 1990. The cemetery was expanded to around 5 hectares and was laid out in 2003. It lies on a plateau and is accessible by stairs. The grave blocks for the war dead of World War II are marked by symbolic cross groups. The complex is surrounded by natural stone walls and paths.

Polish dead

The Polish war dead are buried in the communal cemetery in Ełk (Lyck) on the local war cemetery.
