German Stratigraphic Commission

The German Stratigraphic Commission Abbreviation ( DSK ) is a sub-organization of the National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics and is responsible for the stratigraphy of Germany.

One focus of the commission is to promote lithostratigraphy , the basis of all geological work. The aim of lithostratigraphy is to delimit local and regional lithologically defined rock bodies from one another, to clarify their sequence and storage and to structure them. It is subdivided into sub-commissions for the respective geological age . For the area of ​​Germany the German Stratigraphic Commission u. a. responsible for coordinating the correlation of the various stratigraphic units or systems of units. Using data from the respective regional geological offices , the commission created a new stratigraphic table of Germany (STD) in 2002, which is published on the website (revised in 2016) and also in print.
