The task of the National Committee is to represent the interests of the geodetic and geophysical institutions and their members towards the IUGG. Furthermore , the NKGG coordinates the German scientific tasks to be carried out within the framework of international agreements and programs. The current chairman of the NKGG is Professor Rainer Kind (Potsdam).

The German Stratigraphic Commission (DSK) is a sub-organization of the NKGG.

historical development

The forerunner of the NKGG was the German Geophysical Society founded in 1922 . Four years later she was to be included in the IUGG, which was formed in 1919, but refused to do so because of discriminatory political conditions in France and England. The later agreed accession failed in 1939 when war broke out. It was not until the General Assembly in Brussels in 1951 that the German geosciences could take their place in the Union. The GDR received its own membership in the 1960s.
