Rainer Kind (born April 6, 1943 in Thuringia ) is a German geophysicist .

Child grew up in Erfurt and fled to the West with his parents after graduating from high school and shortly before the Wall was built . He studied geophysics in Hamburg and received his doctorate in 1969. After some time in California at the United States Geological Survey , at the University of Washington and the University of Karlsruhe , he was employed at the Central Seismological Observatory in Erlangen . Since 1992 he has been researching at the Geo Research Center Potsdam , where he was head of the seismology section from 1992 to 2010 . Since 1994 he has been a professor at the Free University of Berlin .

He also researched the structure of the upper mantle using seismic data (further development of the receiver functions method). This was used, for example, to investigate the deep structure under Tibet , showing signs of subduction of the Eurasian plate . In Central Europe , there were signs of a plume under the Eifel and a northward-facing subduction structure at the mantle boundary under the Alps , possibly from the Tethys subduction. He and colleagues also examined the deep structure of the upper mantle in the Andes .

Kind helped develop the GITEWS tsunami early warning system installed in Indonesia after the catastrophic seaquake in 2004 .

In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. In 2012 he became a member of the Leibniz Society , and in 2014 he received the Emil Wiechert Medal .
