National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics of the GDR

The National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics of the GDR was founded around 1960 and was the official representation of the GDR in the International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics . After German reunification, their agendas were transferred to the now all-German National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics .

The National Committee was set up at the Potsdam Academy of Sciences . His duties were

  • the promotion of geophysical knowledge in research, teaching and technical application
  • the promotion of young scientists and interdisciplinary cooperation
  • issuing specialist publications, certain public relations work
  • the representation of East German geosciences in GDR and international bodies.

As usual in most Eastern Bloc countries , it was also subject to political influences.
