Türkân Akyol

Türkân Akyol (born October 12, 1928 in Istanbul ; † September 7, 2017 ) was a Turkish politician , doctor and scientist . She was the first female minister and university rector in Turkey.

academic career

Akyol graduated from Erenköy Girls School in Istanbul in 1947. She then studied medicine at Ankara University , where she graduated from university in 1953. Specializing in pulmonology, she followed her scientific career in the United States, the Netherlands and France as well as at her alma mater in Ankara, where she held a full professorship from 1970. In 1980 Akyol was elected rector of Ankara University and was the first woman in Turkey to hold such a position. After disagreements with the University Council , she resigned in 1982.

Political career

On March 25, 1971, Türkân Akyol was appointed Minister of Health and Social Affairs in Nihat Erim's cabinet, making it the first female member of the government in Turkey's history. In December of the same year, however, she resigned from her position and returned to the university.

In 1983 Akyol became co-founder and vice-chair of the center-left Sosyal Demokrasi Partisi (SODEP). As part of the 1987 elections , Türkân Akyol entered the Turkish parliament as the representative of Izmir Province . After the end of the legislative period, she resumed teaching in 1991 until she was appointed family minister in the government of Suleyman Demirel in 1992. In 1993 she was reappointed minister in the cabinet of the first female prime minister of Turkey, Tansu Çiller .
