German Networking Agency for Rural Areas

The German Networking Agency for Rural Areas (DVS) belongs to the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) based in Bonn. The BLE is a subordinate authority of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Half of the financing for DVS is provided by the EU through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). The EAFRD regulation provides for a National Network for Rural Areas (NLR) to be set up in every country in the European Union. In Germany, DVS is the hub for all partners in the German NLR.

tasks

The DVS has the task of bringing together those nationwide who are committed to ensuring that rural regions remain livable. This includes improving living conditions in rural areas, strengthening villages and regions, preserving landscapes, supporting agriculture and forestry, and promoting environmental and nature conservation. In Germany, the contents of the EAFRD are implemented through 13 country programs. Every country program defines different priorities, because every country and region has different possibilities and potential. Funding for regional development can be applied for in cooperation with the respective federal state, for example via LEADER. LEADER is a methodical approach to regional development that enables local people to help shape regional processes.
