The German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB) is a registered association in Germany. It was founded in 1897 as a hay fever association on Heligoland . The patient organization is based in Mönchengladbach . As an interest group, it is socio-politically committed to consumer protection.

Members

The association has around 18,100 members, both individuals and self-help groups and consumer associations. These include 3,000 doctors, pharmacists, midwives and specialist clinics.

In addition to the federal headquarters in Mönchengladbach, there are three regional offices and 120 local groups throughout Germany. A total of 20 full-time specialists work in the federal headquarters and in the three regional centers, including nutritionists, pedagogues, chemists and biologists as well as asthma, neurodermatitis and anaphylaxis trainers.

activities

The association's advice centers answer over 50,000 inquiries every year. The consultation starts after the medical diagnosis. The main focus is on the everyday life of the individual. Experience with medicines and products is also incorporated into the association's data collection. This is supported by doctors and scientists from different disciplines.

Dialogue with companies

In initiatives to develop new products without fragrances, dyes and preservatives, the association seeks dialogue with companies in the run-up to the development of products that are free from fragrances, dyes and preservatives. This also includes the testing of allergy-free products in order to validate the usefulness of such offers. The association tests pre-selected and suitable products as part of user tests and issues its own logo.

Network of allergological nutritionists

The association set up the network of allergological nutrition specialists in 2000. Appropriate specialists can join this network and also acquire the certificate “Nutritionist Allergology DAAB”. The association offers annual training courses for nutritionists across Germany on various topics related to food intolerance.

Allergy mobile

The association has been operating an “allergy mobile” since 1997, which is used at around 150 locations every year. In the allergy mobile, consultations are carried out by scientific DAAB specialists on the relevant topics, clinical pictures, diagnostics, therapy and medication are informed. The “everyday tips” include tips on avoiding allergens and arranging local training courses and groups and tips on how to get to a specialist / doctor or a clinic.

In the past few years, between 65,000 and 80,000 people have visited the allergy mobile locations in one season in order to obtain information or advice. In addition to locations in city centers, many mobile allergy appointments also take place as part of health days in companies, on action days in pharmacies, health authorities, health insurance companies, medical centers, schools, etc.

Projects

"Kitacheck" initiative

By 2014 the association wants to check a total of 100 kindergartens for their allergen and pollutant concentration. An examination costs between 2500 and 3000 euros. Based on these initial results, the association expanded its range and a. New vacuum cleaners, air purification devices, mattresses, mold remediation are available in order to achieve healthy standards in the rooms in a timely manner.

“Safe Food” initiative The association is committed to improving the labeling of which allergens are contained in a food in trade, commerce and industry. Together with hotel and restaurant associations, the association is developing a scout system in order to be able to provide nationwide information on suitable restaurants that cater to the needs of allergy sufferers. The association is building a warning system through which consumers are promptly notified by email in the event of incorrect labeling, recalls or the accidental transmission of traces of problematic ingredients. He also researches u. a. with test purchases to find out which products are misleading for allergy sufferers. For restaurant owners and cooks, the DAAB offers free restaurant cards and advice on topics such as “avoiding allergies” and the like. a. with information packages for emergencies in the event of an allergic shock.

“Air to breathe” initiative The association works to reduce the causes of asthma diseases by financing product test purchases and testing for pollutants in the air, giving affected children a cure at the seaside or in the high mountains and carrying out awareness-raising campaigns. In addition, the association provides kindergartens, elementary schools and classes of the lower secondary level with materials and teacher manuals for project days and teaching units. Every year the DAAB carries out lung function tests at 150 locations.

Healthy Skin Initiative

The association tests cosmetic products, detergents, etc. Ä. With which the skin of consumers comes into contact, on contents such as fragrances, colors and preservatives. Misleading labels such as “hypoallergenic” should be uncovered and the reliability of the labels “suitable for allergy sufferers” should be checked.

financing

The association is mainly financed from membership fees and donations and is independent of pharmaceutical companies and public funds. A few projects are subsidized by health insurance companies.
