The German Association of Utility Dog Sports Associations (DVG) was founded on November 8, 1947 as the successor organization to the first police dog association, the PHV (Association for the Promotion and Breeding of Police Dogs), which was established in 1902. It has 750 member associations with more than 35,000 members in the Federal Republic and North America. The association is based in Hemer .

The DVG was a member of the German Dog Sports Association (dhv) until December 31, 2012 and has been a direct member of the Association for the German Dog Industry since January 1, 2013 . The DVG is also a member of the International Rescue Dog Organization .
