The foundation and award of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor has been approved by the Federal President ( Art. 2 Order Decree).

Carrying method

The German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor (FEK) is only worn in its original size on festive occasions, in particular:

The step in gold should preferably always be worn as a cross on the left breast pocket. The German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor on the ribbon is worn on the left breast pocket flap. Since the award is recognized by the Federal President, all grades awarded by the FEK can be worn. The strap buckle to the FEK is worn on the uniform jacket. The original award must always be removed if the strap buckle is worn at the same time. For civilian suits , the strap bridge to the FEK is worn on the left lapel of the buttonhole placket .

Award

According to the deed of foundation, the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor is awarded for outstanding achievements in the fire service, for particularly courageous behavior in the fire service and for rescuing people from mortal danger during the operation if the fire service member has found himself in particularly significant mortal danger. The German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor is not awarded on the basis of long-term membership in the fire brigade. The ordinary members ( state fire brigade associations , regional groups, federal groups) of the German fire brigade association are entitled to make suggestions for the award of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor . Men and women who do not belong to the German Fire Brigade Association and are to be honored can be proposed directly to the President of the German Fire Brigade Association. The proposals are to be forwarded to the President of the German Fire Brigade Association. If you are awarded the Fire Brigade Cross of Honor again, the previously awarded levels are not taken down. Awards of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor are carried out on a list by the President of the German Fire Brigade Association. All borrowers receive a certificate with the signature of the President of the German Fire Brigade Association. The German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor becomes the property of the borrower. His surviving dependents are not obliged to return them. In order to prevent the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor from being devalued due to an overly generous award, the number of awards is tied to certain quotas. A German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor in bronze can be awarded to every 800 active members of the fire brigade. At the silver level, a fire brigade cross of honor can be awarded annually for every 1,000 active members of the fire brigade. The prior award of the bronze level is not a requirement. The gold level can only be awarded if the silver level has already been awarded. A fire brigade cross of honor in gold can be awarded annually for every 3,000 active members of the fire brigade. These quotas are guidelines that can be exceeded in special cases. Only merits and worthiness are decisive for the award of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor. The publication of the award of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor should be made by the full member by naming the name in the responsible state fire brigade newspaper. At the 60th anniversary of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor, the silver level 29,100 and the gold level 5,400 were awarded since 1953.

layout

The German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor (FEK) is a cross enamelled blue on both sides, with four red flames emerging from the intersection. A round metal band underlaid with a cross bears the inscription FÜR MERDIENSTE IN FIRE BRIGADE on the front and the inscription GERMAN FIRE BRIGADE ASSOCIATION on the back . A black eagle is placed in the middle of the front of the cross. With the FEK in gold, all non-enamelled metal parts are gold and with the FEK on the ribbon in silver or bronze. The grosgrain ribbon of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor on the ribbon is blue in the middle, with red stripes on both sides and silver or bronze edging. The strap buckle for uniform wearers has a red / blue / red strap, the color of the steps and the miniature of the badge in the middle . The ribbon bar for the civil society suit is 15 × 9 mm and resembles the ribbon buckle of the cross of honor.

history

The history of the first uniform fire brigade decoration in Germany begins in 1928 with the foundation of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor by the DFV. The first fire brigade cross of honor was awarded as 1st and 2nd class from 1929. The 2nd class was made as a silver Maltese cross with flames on the side, here a medallion with a golden embossed eagle was placed in the middle on the front and the "Saint Florian" was incorporated on the back. In the 1st class, the cross was additionally glazed in red with translucent hatching, with a silver frame and flames. As a further distinction, the honor cross was awarded on a red / blue / red ribbon for fire service members and non-fire service members on a white / red ribbon. In 1936 the award ended, compulsory.

At the first meeting of the fire brigade committee in 1952 it was decided to work towards the reintroduction of a uniform fire brigade decoration. Here a meeting with the Federal President was used to present the matter. Federal President Theodor Heuss approved the initiative and recognized the foundation of the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor (FEK). The German Fire Brigade Association donated the steps in silver and gold on February 26, 1953, both steps were presented on the ribbon as awards. On February 27, the first FEK was awarded by the then DFV President Bürger. The 1929 design was not adopted, only an eagle was on the front and the ribbon was again in the basic color blue with red stripes. The new FEK was created in its current form, but until 1974 it bore the inscription FOR MERIT IN FIRE EXTINGUISHING on the front and the two sides of the cross were made with a translucent blue honeycomb pattern. The 1953 version of the strap buckles are recognizable without the central miniature of the FEK, only with the silver or gold grosgrain ribbon on both sides . The way of wearing the award for the civil suit was a loop to the level of the ribbon. The gold level has been awarded as a plug- in cross since 1974 and in 2011 the German Fire Brigade Cross of Honor was extended with the bronze level.
