The Dewoitine D.27 was a single seat light fighter between the world wars. It was designed by Émile Dewoitine in response to the STAE's tender for a light fighter of the "C1 légers" class. In terms of structure, Dewoitine remained true to the line of previous fighters, while he made a number of changes in aerodynamics. The model was powered by a Hispano-Suiza HS-12Mb . The D.27 was given an axle chassis instead of individual wheels.

construction

During the construction of the D.27, Émile Dewoitine's company went bankrupt in February 1927 . The development was then handed over to the Eidgenössische Konstruktionswerkstätte (K + W) in Thun, whereupon the first prototype made its first flight on June 3, 1928. After Dewoitine went into business again in March 1928 with the Société Aéronautique Française-Avions Dewoitine, the second and third pre-series machines were delivered to France in April 1929. Newly motorized with a Hispano-Suiza HS-12Jb with 400 HP, this specimen was designated as D 272. The other preproduction machine was armed with two 7.7 mm machine guns. After evaluation by the STAE, a contract was signed on November 29, 1929 for the delivery of the two pre-series machines and the delivery of three more D.27s. The three other pre-production aircraft were assembled at Lioré & Olivier . The D.27 were equipped with a HS 12Hb with 500 hp and were known by the French Air Force as the D 271. One example was equipped with a Gnome-Rhône Jupiter VI with compressor, which had an output of 425 hp in 4000 m. This version was known under the name D 273. However, the Luftwaffe did not order one of the two versions.

Use in the Swiss Air Force

At the end of 1929, the Swiss Air Force made the decision to equip the fighter squadrons with new aircraft. For this purpose, five pre-series machines were delivered to K + W under the designation D-27 III. This began in 1931. This was followed by 15 pre-series machines and 45 series machines. A total of 66 machines were delivered to the air force. These aircraft remained in service with the fighter squadrons until 1940. After that they were used for training until 1944 before they were completely retired. A plane crashed in Lucerne in 1941 while approaching the Allmend.
