The term diagnostic agent ( synonym identifier ) is also used in medicine in particular in the context of the recognition and differentiation of diseases ( diagnostics ) . It denotes either a direct identification feature or an aid (e.g. chemical substance or imaging examination method ) that is used with the aim of producing such a feature. The term is also used analogously in education in the context of individual learning status analyzes and in psychology .

Books that were published with this term in the title are intended as an aid to finding a diagnosis and contain the description of appropriate procedures (assessment and interpretation).

Basically, a distinction can be made between “ in vivo ” and “ in vitro diagnostics”. The Medical Devices Act defines “in vitro diagnostics” aids that are suitable for examining samples taken from the human body. This includes reagent , reagent product, adjustment and calibration material , sample container, control material , kit, instrument, apparatus, device or system. Typical examples are breath tests (alcohol test and examination of the gastrointestinal tract) and drug (rapid) tests (blood analysis, urine control, saliva test, hair analysis, nail examinations and wipe tests, i.e. the sweat is examined). Typical examples of in vivo diagnostics are imaging methods .
