history

The history of the Diakonie-Zentrum Salzburg begins with the foundation of the Diakonissen-Krankenhaus Salzburg in 1935, when the former sanatorium Schwarzbach in Imbergstrasse in the center of Salzburg was acquired by the "Evangelical Association for Inner Mission" - today the Evangelical Diakoniewerk Gallneukirchen.

The accommodation at that time was the so-called "Saulich Schlössl", also called "Schloss Arnstein" (Imbergstrasse 31), which was owned by the Bohemian doctor Dr. Josef Schwarzbach was acquired in 1929. According to plans by Richard Bandian, the turrets and bay windows were demolished in 1931/32 in favor of a bare functional building and opened as a sanatorium in 1933. This building was recently revitalized (health center, apartments, fitness club). Nothing is left of the old residence or the additions made by the deaconesses.

The private hospital run by the deaconesses was constantly expanding, which in the 1980s led to cramped conditions. At that time, the city of Salzburg offered the Diakoniewerk a plot of land in Salzburg-Aigen - for the new construction of the hospital and a facility for the elderly. In 1994 the Diakonie-Zentrum Salzburg finally started operations in the Aigen district. In addition to the deaconess hospital, the diaconal cornerstones are the house for seniors with the Aigen day center and short-term care, mobile senior citizens' aid, the school for social care professions and a church. In 2001, the Diakonie-Zentrum's tasks were expanded to include district-oriented social work in the Aigen & Parsch, Gnigl & Schallmoos and Itzling & Elisabeth-Vorstadt resident services on behalf of the City of Salzburg. In 2006 the facility “Leopold-Pfest-Straße - Living and Support for People with Disabilities” was opened. Since 2008 the Diakonie-Zentrum Salzburg has been offering young people with disabilities or learning difficulties a job and training position at the Kulinarium Salzburg.
