When you visually (. Greek 'dicha': double, separated) refers to the presentation of pictures or movies, a separate image is presented in each eye.

If the two images correspond to a slightly shifted view of an object, then the two images are merged into a three-dimensional object in the perception of the viewer. Such pairs of images are known as stereograms . There are special cameras for taking the images in which two lenses are arranged at a distance that roughly corresponds to the distance between the eyes of humans. In order for this merging to succeed, the two images must be presented at the same angle to the respective eye. Various techniques have been developed for this purpose in the context of stereoscopy .

If the images presented to the two eyes differ greatly, then they cannot be perceived by the viewer as a consistent, three-dimensional scene. As part of the binocular rivalry, the brain then perceives one of the two images preferentially, while the other is largely faded out.
