The older sister (French: La Soeur aînée , English: The Elder Sister ) is a painting by the French painter William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905). It was completed in 1869.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston received this painting as an anonymous gift in 1992. According to the museum website, the painting was a gift from an anonymous lady in memory of her father. Since then, The Elder Sister has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (in the “European Art” section), and it is considered one of the highlights of the collection.

The painting shows a girl ("the older sister"). She sits on a stone and holds a sleeping child ("the younger brother") on her lap. Behind them is a quiet rural landscape. Bouguereau's daughter Henriette and son Paul served as models for this scene. The wonderful beauty of the girl, her eyes looking directly at the viewer, the composition including the positioning of the arms and legs of the children - all of this shows the academic painting style of Bouguereau, who was considered one of the most famous European realistic genre painters of his time.

The dimensions of the painting are 130.2 × 97.2 cm, and the frame is 171.5 × 139.7 × 14 cm.

There is another painting by Bouguereau (completed in 1864), also called The Elder Sister . It's part of the Brooklyn Museum's permanent collection .
