Burgerhuis to Die Braak

The Braak is the central square of the South African city of Stellenbosch . Around it is a large number of historically significant buildings, the white facades of which give it its classicist character.

Originally, the square was created around 1703 as a training area for the vigilante groups in Stellenbosch and Drakenstein . In the meantime it was also known as Koningsplein and Adderley Square .

In order to put a stop to the desire for development, an official decision was made in 1908 that the square had to keep its open character “for the freedom and well-being of the residents”.
