action

Olga Dmitrievna, the 27-year-old wife of the surgeon, Doctor Nikolai Evgrafytsch, hangs around outside at night and usually doesn't come home until around five in the morning. The doctor sometimes works as a detective on sleepless nights; Rummages through Olga's papers and investigates that one of her gallants is 23-year-old Mikhail Ivanytsch Ris. Olgas Michel lives in Monte Carlo . The doctor, the son of a village pop, a former pupil of a seminary, an upright man who has been coarse in the past good years, keeps wondering how he could fall for Olga - such a low creature with a predatory face. The doctor is heavily in debt and cannot support his mother financially.

When Olga comes home that morning, she only has her fifteen rubles in mind, which her companion, the student Azarbekov, is said to have lost. The doctor - a colleague had diagnosed him with tuberculosis - has no sense for a few rubles in the early morning, but wants a clear situation in view of his imminent end. Finally, Olga agrees to speak. The doctor - a wreck - releases his wife. Because she is young and healthy, Olga is allowed to marry her galan Ris in Monte Carlo.

Nothing. Under no circumstances will Olga get a divorce. For her next nocturnal adventure she begs the doctor, who is about to start work at the hospital around noon, for twenty-five rubles.
