The story of the great squabble between Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich ( Russian Повесть о том, как поссорился Иван Иванович с Иваном Никифоровичем ) is a story of the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852). It appeared as the last story in the Mirgorod Collection of Tales in 1835.

The story is about how two neighbors, Iwan Iwanowitsch and Iwan Nikiforowitsch, quarrel for decades over the course of the failure of an old rifle for a brown pig to be exchanged.

The story was printed in an almanac by the St. Petersburg publishing house Smirdine in 1832 and included in Mirgorod , a two-volume edition of Gogol's stories in 1835 . Korfiz Holm's translation was first published in 1925 in a two-volume edition of selected stories by Verlag Albert Langen . It was reprinted as a single edition by several publishers in the following years. In 1962 the first edition of the story appeared in the Korfiz translation with pen drawings by Josef Hegenbarth in the Leipziger Insel-Verlag . Originals of Josef Hegenbarth's drawings for Gogol's story can be found in the Kupferstich-Kabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden .
