The carbide lamp Still Life II is a painting from the early work of Joan Miró , which he painted in Catalonia in 1922/23. The picture created in Mont-roig del Camp and Paris is considered a work of transition, in which Miró finally turned away from the representation of reality.

The carbide lamp painted Miró 1922-23 in a period of change after that still in the table (Still Life with Rabbit) (1920) and The Farm had left (1921-22) realistic style of painting, which eventually 1923/24 in his key works Plowed Earth and Catalan Landscape (The Hunter) flowed. In The Carbide Lamp , Miró reduces the subject “drastically to clearly outlined forms set against a flat background. While the lamp is still slightly shaded, the fruit and the lattice are only made up of lines. ”It belongs to a series of still lifes such as Der Tisch (Still Life with Rabbits) (1920), Table with Glove (1921), The Ear of Corn (1922/23 ) and grid and carbide lamp (1922/23), "whereby the surface depicted on the canvas as well as all objects standing on it were depicted without depth and in this way the entire picture was transformed into a cohesive, decorative surface." Miró's painting style is more modern Cool shaped.

Provenance

The painting The Carbide Lamp is now in the New York Museum of Modern Art and is not on public display.
