The Memoirs of Judas ( Memorie di Giuda ) is a historical novel by the Italian journalist and writer Ferdinando Petruccelli della Gattina . The first version appeared in France in 1867 . According to the author, the novel represents an upgrading of Judas Iscariot . According to this, Judas Iscariot is not a traitor, but the leader of the rebellion of the Jews against the tyranny of the Roman Empire .

The novel brings up the author's anti-clericalism . It sparked controversy within the Roman Catholic Church and was also criticized by Benedetto Croce . The work inspired the Portuguese writer José Maria Eça de Queiroz to write his novel The Relic .
