The giants are coming! (orig. The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth ) is a 1904 science fiction novel by the English writer HG Wells .

action

Researcher Bensington and his colleagues are developing a growth agent with which they want to solve nutritional problems. First, they experiment with wheat and farm animals that grow larger than normal. The project runs smoothly until the first catastrophes loom: some animals - including insects - are changed by the unplanned consumption of the product: wasps and rats grow to enormous sizes, people are in danger and deaths occur.

Despite the incidents, the researchers are considering giving the "god food" to humans too, after all they are secretly experimenting on babies. Giant babies soon appeared in the country using cars, trees and other objects as toys. Humans can successfully fight the giant rats and insects, but then they begin to take action against the peaceful human giants.

With his novel, the author anticipates the discussion about genetic engineering , as he did with “ The Island of Dr. Moreau ”did.

filming

In 1976 the novel was made into a film under the title The Food Of The Gods ( The Island of Monsters ). The film was produced as a B-movie and received scathing reviews. For example, it received the Golden Turkey Award for worst rodent film of all time . In 1989 the film The Food Of The Gods 2: Gnaw continued . However, this only had the same title for marketing reasons and nothing in common with the first part or the novel in terms of content.
