The City of the Sighted ( Ensaio sobre a lucidez ) is a novel by José Saramago published in 2004 .

In the capital of a western country, over 70% of voters, tired of the ruling politics, cast blank ('white') ballots in local elections . The amazing thing is that there was no recognizable mobilization for this. From this point of view, the government imposes a state of siege on the capital and isolates it from the rest of the country. Finally, the characters in the book The City of the Blind appear as suspected authors of the alleged uprising .

The city of the sighted is Saramago's criticism of the political institutions of Western democracies .

In the 2004 European elections of Portugal , in which the author ran unsuccessfully, to submit empty ballot was called, eventually Saramago was the inspiration behind this work.
