Those without blessings (English original title The Lesser Blessed ) is a novel by the native American author Richard Van Camp , which was published in 1996 . It was translated by Ulrich Plenzdorf and was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2001.

The teenager Larry, a native of the Tlicho , lives with his mother in a small Canadian town. Larry's closest caregiver is his mother's often absent boyfriend. The mother herself tries to study. He has only superficial contact with his peers. He cannot reveal his love for the school beauty Juliette. When he becomes friends with the rowdy and rebel Johnny, who is more experienced and mature, who is moving to town, a new dynamic emerges in the relationships between the people. As they try to escape the dreary everyday life of the small town, they succumb to a world of marijuana use, alcohol and sex. Despite the confusing plot, the reader is transported into the mind of an insecure young person who is trying to discover the meaning of his life in a dreary small town. In this small town the suffering of the whole world seems to be united. You just have to look carefully to see what hells a traumatized adolescent goes through during puberty.
