A duty officer is a (mostly managerial) employee of a service department who is responsible for the regular handling of duty and any external inquiries.

In military positions or for barracks this is usually a lower rank of an officer (also an officer on duty ), in observatories and weather stations an experienced scientist , in nautical science the deck officer and in editorial offices the editor on duty .
