The firm Dimensional Fund Advisors LP (abbreviated as Dimensional, DFA) is a private investment firm headquartered in Austin , Texas , USA , with offices in Canada, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Singapore and Japan.

The company was founded in 1981 by David G. Booth and Rex Sinquefield, both graduates of the University of Chicago School of Business (now Booth School of Business). The company offers around one hundred mutual funds for stocks and fixed income securities.

Dimensional had assets under management of $ 586 billion as of June 30, 2019. Institutional investors can access Dimensional funds directly or through their advisor; retail investors can access Dimensional funds through financial professionals or through their retirement plans or through specific savings plans for 529 colleges. The company belongs to its employees, board members and external investors, including Arnold Schwarzenegger .

On November 6, 2008, the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business announced a $ 300 million gift from David Booth in the form of cash and Dimensional Stock earnings. The school was renamed the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

On December 2, 2009, Dimensional announced the acquisition of SmartNest , a computer software company for retirement planning. The technology offered by SmartNest was developed by Robert C. Merton, who left the company's board of directors after the purchase to become a resident scientist.
