The Castle Mörtenegg even Martinseck or Dinzlschloss called, is in Villach district of St. Martin.

history

The castle was built by Sigmund Khevenhüller around 1550 on the site of a free Khevenhüller court that dates back to the 15th century . In 1622 Hans Widmann appears to be the owner of the castle, in 1637 the Grotta von Grottenegg family, after 1874 Ignaz Dinzl. In 1944 Else Dinzl bequeathed the castle to the city of Villach. From 1953 to 2004 the castle served as an apprentice home for the Carinthian provincial government. Today the castle is used for youth and cultural tasks.

Building

The castle is a medium-sized, cubic building with three floors and a corner core. Above the entrance portal there is a small balcony with a round arched door, above which the coats of arms of Siegmund Khevenhüller and his wife Katharina von Gleinitz can be seen. In 1985 three sundials were uncovered. In the vaulted entrance hall with ornamental, marble capitals, a stone relief plate with a Pietà from 1509 is attached to the left wall. The middle hall on the ground floor has a groined vault. The large hall on the upper floor has ornamental capitals and a portal with the coat of arms of the Khevenhüller family. There is a stucco ceiling in the southern bay room. On the street side, the castle has two round defense towers. In 1978, wall paintings from the 16th century were uncovered in the northeast tower.
